I discovered this book originally as a teenager, in my grandmother's attic. It quickly became my favorite book EVER, and has remained a favorite of mine for the past 4 decades. I believe Mary J Holmes books should have been deemed classic, like Louisa May Alcott, or Bess Streeter Aldrich. The story is fun, romantic, and unbelievably riveting. I recommend it to everyone!
I agree--this should be a classic. While a bit of a melodrama, and with more of the Victorian attitude that the wicked (thats you Isabel) will be punished and the good rewarded, this book is still a fast, interesting and delightful read. The plot is twisty but easy to follow and while Marian's actions are a bit dramatic, this was another time, things were different, so it is easy to believe. Mary Jane Holmes should be on every one's list. English Orphans is perhaps even better.
I like all of Mary Jane Holmes reading, but this Marion Grey has so many typing mistakes in it. I have to stop and read twice sometimes to figure what the word is. I have read every one of her books I can find and all of them are 5 Stars to me. I really enjoy this . If I can't sleep; I read. Waitihg for something, I read. Upset, I read. Anything can be solved by stopping to read. Love it
